Jesus and His Ministers Bring True Healing to the World (Mark 7: 31-37)
April 14, 2013 Preacher: Eric Douma Series: Mark
Scripture: Mark 7: 31–37
In Mark 7:31-37 Jesus heals a man who was deaf and spoke with great difficulty. The ability to heal this man demonstrates that Jesus is the fulfillment of Isaiah 35:5b-6a which states, "the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will shout for joy." This Old Testament prophecy spoke of the future Millennial Kingdom in which God's people would no longer suffer physical anguish. The reader of Mark's gospel can be certain that in the person and work of Jesus, this kingdom had drawn near.
We also learn of Jesus' great compassion as He interacts with this Gentile man. Jesus' sigh reveals a deep empathy that leads Him to heal the man by the power of His word. Since Jesus can heal by His spoken word, we can conclude that He is God. We should also conclude that in our own lives and ministries true compassion should lead us to proclaim the "word of Christ" so that all who believe the gospel will also have the ultimate healing that only Jesus can bring.
