Christ Had to Die and Rise Three Days Later (Mark 9:30-32)

August 11, 2013 Preacher: Eric Douma Series: Mark

Scripture: Mark 9:30–32

Jesus taught three times in the book of Mark that He must die at the hands of godless men and be raised on the third day. In Mark 9:30-32 we examine the second of these teachings as they occurred chronologically throughout Mark's gospel. We learn in this lesson that it was God the Father's sovereign decision to have Jesus crucified, and therefore anyone who denigrates the substitutionary atonement of Christ is denigrating God's plan for our redemption! We also learn that Jesus fulfilled three significant Old Testament prophecies that spoke of God's anointed being raised on the third day. Jesus' resurrection on the third day was a down payment proving that God will one day resurrect all who belong to Christ. Sadly, the disciples initially didn't understand these things. They were prideful and therefore refused to ask Jesus to clarify why He had to die and be raised on the third day. We can learn from this that it is always appropriate to ask God in prayer for the understanding and wisdom that flow from the Word of God.
