To understand what John means by not loving the world, we have to know that the word “world” (kosmos) has a range of meanings. We are not to love the world in its sinful lusts and rebellion against God. If we do love the world in its alienated state, we too will be motivated not by love for God, but by various lusts and prideful attitudes. It is only by grace that we can see the world for the wicked system that it is. When people live for the world’s lusts, they often end up either bitter or proud. But doing God’s will means eternal joy. We need to love the truth and believe the promises of God.
