John says that by abiding in God, love is brought to completion in believers. In this state, we have boldness even in light of the day of judgment. Some try to give false hope by claiming that all paths lead to God in a saving way. But God grants true hope only to those who believe the gospel and are in a valid loving relationship with God and His people. John assures us that love casts our fear as we know Christ and believe God’s promises. Merely saying we love God is empty talk if we refuse to have fellowship with fellow Christians. Human law-givers peddle fear and offer no true relief. But Jesus Christ rescues repentant sinners from Satan and the fear of death.
