Glorious, Rich Hope in Christ (Ephesians 1:18-20)

June 24, 2018 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: Ephesians

Scripture: Ephesians 1:18-20

Paul uses the phrase “having been enlightened” to describe conversion. Because the pagans in Ephesus made claims about providing “enlightenment” through their false religions, Paul assured the Christians they already had true enlightenment. What they need is for the truth to weigh heavily upon them, not to seek something more. We of all people have hope. That Paul mentions the “hope of His calling” creates the need to know which calling this means: the external, universal call of the gospel or the internal, effectual call that brings conversion. We argue that this use of “calling” here is the effectual, internal call. Paul emphasizes “glory” and uses the term in reference to what we have in Christ. Paul also uses numerous terms for “power” from the Greek language to describe God’s work in the lives of believers. We show that the royal enthronement of Psalm 110:1 is a key truth that reveals that we have access to the highest power in the universe, the Lord Jesus Christ. He has the highest place of honor and power and also cares for us as those who trust in Him alone. We have access to the throne of grace and have no need for the magic or superstition of pagan religion. We are to cast all our cares on Him because He cares for us (1Peter 5:7)
