Unlike the Ethiopian in the previous section, Paul was not seeking the meaning of a messianic text, he was a violent enemy of the gospel. In a theophany, he meets the Jesus whom he persecutes. In this pericope, Christians are called “the way.” In this theophany, there is intense light. Light is associated with Messianic salvation in Isaiah 49:6. In this theophany, Jesus reveals who He is to Paul. Though the others witnessed the event, they did not participate in the revelatory part of it. We end with a discussion of divine necessity and free will.
