Essential Virtues in Christian Ministry: 2 Timothy 2:21-24

August 13, 2023 Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles

Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:21-24

This series is based on Paul’s address to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20. We are exploring the topic of valid ministry in the church by explaining some passages in 1 and 2 Timothy which are also about teachers and Christ. In 2 Timothy 2:21, Paul speaks of removing defilements through cleansing away false teaching such as that of Hymenaeus and Philetus who had seriously wrong eschatology. My claim is that bad eschatology leads to bad ecclesiology. Paul is teaching Timothy what is necessary for being “prepared for every good work” in the context of elders in the church. Doctrines and practices which bring dishonor to God must be removed and replaced with godly teaching and virtues. Two key words in these verses are “flee” and “pursue.” Joseph in Genesis is an example of fleeing evil and pursuing virtue. Much of this class is focused on the church as organic rather than institutional. Those attached to the head through regenerative by the Spirit are the ones who “call on the Lord from a pure heart” (verse 22). Institutions are motivated to preserve themselves by whatever means. The institutional church rewards loyalty to the institution, not fleeing what is dishonorable and pursuing “righteousness, faith, love and peace’ which are fruits of the Spirit. The phrase, “prepared for every good work” uses terminology that is found in Revelation for the Bride of Christ who has “made herself ready” (Rev. 19:7). Postmillennial institutions are seeking to make themselves ready to rule now on the earth through fighting culture wars. The organic church, attached to Jesus Christ as the head preaches repentance for forgiveness of sins, redemption, and sanctification. Fleeing from coming wrath is important, not merely making the visible institution powerful. We cite and discuss Romans 2:7, 8 to that end.
