Patiently Teach the Truth: 2 Timothy 2:23-26

September 3, 2023 Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles

Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:23-26

As we continue to define the church as the body of Christ, with each member attached to the Head, Jesus Christ, we carefully study Paul’s instructions to Timothy. Paul from Roman prison addresses Timothy in regard to what is essential for the elders of all congregations. Timothy is in Ephesus. Today we continue to explain why foolish speculations must be rejected.

The teaching of the local congregation must be grounded in Scripture, not unprofitable theories. Claims that are impervious to either proof or counter-evidence can only produce quarrels. On the other hand, careful exegesis of Scripture can be judged by the members of the Lord’s flock. Biblical exegesis should permeate the ministry of every congregation.

Members of the congregation can challenge elders if they are making faulty claims. We can encourage and correct one another. Sadly, most teaching throughout church history is grounded in parochial dogma which cannot be challenged. This is not compatible with the authority of Scripture and priesthood of every believer.

Secular topics that are of no import to the gospel or the whole counsel of God should never dominate a local congregation. 1 Tim. 1:5 says that the “goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart.” 2 Tim. 2:22 speaks of the congregation as “those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart.”

The only way anyone will have a pure heart is through the spiritual cleansing of the blood atonement. Therefore, the patient teaching of God’s word will always be eternally beneficial to the local congregation. Some may not know the Lord and be in opposition to the truth.

Paul instructs Timothy to be kind to all and patient when wronged. Patience comes from remembering that God was merciful to each of us when we were foolish sinners. We also continue to discuss the reasons why the church is not an institution, but a living organism.
